A Harsh Reminder: Seniors Targeted in Phone Scam
This story out of Hingham hits close to home, especially for those of us who work with seniors and their families every day. A 76-year-old local resident was scammed out of a staggering $30,000 after receiving a phone call from someone pretending to be a lawyer. The scammer told her that her grandson had been arrested and needed bail money - something no grandparent wants to hear. Out of fear and love, she acted quickly, withdrawing thousands from her bank account and handing it over to a complete stranger.
It’s a brutal reminder that these scams are getting more sophisticated, and our elderly population is often the prime target. These criminals know how to push emotional buttons, especially when it comes to grandchildren. That’s why it’s so important to talk with your family members—especially aging parents or grandparents—about these schemes before they happen. Encourage them to call you first before doing anything. A little skepticism can go a long way.
